I started by quilting straight lines horizontally through all of the diamonds, and then turned the quilt and did vertical lines as well, so each diamond had a cross through the center.
Then came the hard part, at least for me! I am still not the greatest at free motion quilting, although I have been practicing. I did some practice loops on a scrap quilt sandwich to get the hang of it before starting the real thing, and then quilted the loops through the sashing in both diagonal directions.
The loops definitely aren't perfect, but thankfully the pattern is pretty forgiving from far away!
The goal was to make the diamonds look like kites. The loops are what Kelly had used in the original quilt in the book, and I thought they would work to represent the kite strings. Do you see it? The quilting gives it some amazing dimension, it's almost three-dimensional when the light hits it. The dense quilting in the sashing makes the diamonds really pop!
I'm really happy with how this quilt is turning out. All that's left is binding!
The quilting on your quilt is very lovely! I love everything about this quilt!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful quilt and your quilting design is just perfect. Yes, I see the kite strings! I think your FMQ looks terrific!
ReplyDeleteI super duper LOVE your loopy swirls - they are perfectly lovely and make your kits BOTH pop and look like little flying kites - fun!!!!
ReplyDeleteCan I ask as a free motion noob on a Janome, what do you set your machine at?
ReplyDeleteoh my word -- how much do I LOVE that quilting!!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, SO pretty! Your FMQ looks fantastic, and that fabric range is so so beautiful.
ReplyDeletewow! wow! wow! this quilting is perfect for the design. and i love your colors in this. such a happy quilt.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a video of your fmq loops. I'm just starting to attempt a fmq style but I feel like I'm SO slow with the turns and trying to maneuver the bulky quilt around in loops. With such tight and copious loops, I'm thinking you MUST have a more efficient technique! This quilt is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful, love the kites and the fabrics and colours you chose are wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilting!
